Archbishop Dolan has appointed Fr. Romanus Nwaru as administrator of
St. Paul Parish. The appointment is effective June 20, 2006.
Father Romanus is an Archdiocesan priest, ordained in 1995. He is originally from Nigeria, but is now a citizen of the United States. He studied in the High School Seminary in Nigeria and graduated from the College Seminary with a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from the Pontifical Urbanian University in Rome. After teaching in the High School Seminary and serving as Associate Editor of his diocesan newspaper, he entered the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, for a Master’s degree in Political Science.
He came to Milwaukee in 1989 and spent a year at Marquette University, before joining St. Francis Seminary to continue studies for the priesthood. After five years of theology studies, he obtained a Master of Divinity degree in theology and was ordained a priest by Archbishop Weakland at St. John Cathedral in 1995, for ministry in this Archdiocese.
Father Romanus served three years as Associate Pastor at St. Mary Parish, Elm Grove and four years as Associate Pastor and Temporary Administrator at St. Charles Parish, Hartland. He served as secretary/coordinator for priests in Districts 4 and 5 of Waukesha County, and was on the Board of Directors of Waukesha Memorial High School. He was later appointed Pastor of St. Catherine Parish, Milwaukee, where he served for a year. Father Romanus obtained a Doctorate degree in theology/ministry from the University of St. Mary of the Lake, Mundelein, Illinois in 2000. He has also finished the course work for a Master’s degree in Liturgical Studies at the Liturgical Institute of the university, which he started in 2004.
Fr. Romanus is the current president of the African Catholic Clergy and Religious Association in the Midwest (an association involving African priests, nuns, seminarians and aspirants, in the Midwest, USA). He is an avid soccer player and played with several soccer clubs in the Milwaukee area. He also plays tennis, volleyball and chess.
This past year Father Romanus served as chaplain at Pius High School and also chaplain at West Allis Memorial Hospital. We are happy and honored to have Father Romanus at St. Paul.
